Graffiti on the East Side

You can’t go to Berlin and not go on the hunt for street art, the city is well known for this and there is no end of amazing art work to see. We were a little lazy / spent too much time drinking on this occasion though! We would be definitely be back again to discover more, but this time took the easy option of a visit to Berlin’s East Side Gallery.

The East Side Gallery is an open-air gallery in Berlin. It is one the longest remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall – 1,316 metres to be exact – and one of the top attractions in Berlin. It was one of the first major public canvases for urban artists and over 3 million people a year are estimated to visit it. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th, 1989, the cement segments that remain have stood as something more symbolic than just a wall and now consist of more than 100 murals by artists from all over the world, originally painted on the east side of the wall shortly after its fall.

The works have been replenished throughout the years, but the most famous sections remain, included “My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love,” more commonly known as the “Fraternal Kiss” by Dmitri Vrubel, which you can see below. The image shows Soviet Leonid Brezhnev and East German President, Erich Honecker, locked in a passionate kiss.
