Bryn’s Box Office / Bohemian Rhapsody

In celebration of #plushiemusicwednesday we went to cinema to watch Bohemian Rhapsody. Wow, just wow! New favourite! If you haven’t gone yet go and watch, it’s absolutely A M A Z I N G ❤❤❤ loved every second of it!

For those of you not familiar, Bohemian Rhapsody is a song by the British rock band Queen. It was written by Freddie Mercury for the band’s 1975 album A Night at the Opera. It was a risky six minutes long, consisting of intro, ballad, guitar solo, opera (yes opera!), rock and outro section. Although critical reaction was initially mixed, Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of Queen’s most popular songs and is frequently considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time. When it was released as a single, Bohemian Rhapsody became a commercial success, staying at the top of the UK Singles Chart for nine weeks and selling more than a million copies by the end of January 1976. The song features on Queen’s “The Platinum Collection” available to buy from Amazon UK by following the link.

Now back to the movie, Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his band mates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

The music sequences in the film (especially the Live Aid performance and the recording of the title song) are electrifying and Rami Malek (Mr Robot) excels as Freddie Mercury. I’ve read some mixed reviews of the movie, some say you need to be a fan of the band to enjoy it. I disagree with that and absolutely loved the film. It’s the first time we went to the cinema where Dad didn’t fall asleep, so that speaks volumes, just like Queen’s music. A must watch for any music fan!

The film also give fans a good idea of how much cats meant to Freddie, who wrote a song for one cat and placed long-distance calls to his animals while on tour. Eventually, Mercury hosted a total of 10 cats named Tom, Jerry, Tiffany, Dorothy, Delilah, Goliath, Lily, Miko, Oscar, and Romeo. In 1985, Mercury took his devotion to his cats to a new level—dedicating his solo album Mr. Bad Guy “to my cat Jerry—also Tom, Oscar, and Tiffany, and all the cat lovers across the universe—screw everybody else!”
