Time to call it a night on Night And Day Cafe, Manchester

The title of this post might give you a clue on where I am going with this. Night And Day Cafe is a bit of an Manchester institution it’s fair to say. Situated on Oldham Street, one of the most well-known streets in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, it is both a cafe bar and live music venue and that is probably where my Dad’s beef with the place stems from.

We often find ourselves in there early doors on a Friday evening, usually before a gig elsewhere and ready for a pint or two. We get a drink and go to sit down and as you can probably guess, Dad’s first post-work pint doesn’t really touch the sides and he’s back at the bar before Mum has sat down. “Sorry, we’re closing the bar for an hour whilst we get ready for the gig”… “er, I beg your pardon”… “the bar is closed now”! It’s no word of a lie, when this happens there is normally 40 or 50 customers in, all who are happy to spend their money and can’t. I just don’t get it.

Anyway, as it happens, on this occasion we had managed to at least get food and shots in before the proverbial two fingers were stuck up at us and we had to move on and spend our money elsewhere. I’m not going to be completely negative as we really do like this place. The food is great and we have had some really tasty toasted sandwiches, wraps and burgers and even breakfasts on the weekend and actually it has been our ‘go to’ place to chill on a Saturday morning when we’ve stayed in the city before heading back home… that is of course when it opens on time.
