Bryn de Bear

Praise the lard at Spiz, Wroclaw, Poland

If you’re visiting Wroclaw, a place to definitely put on your agenda if you’re a beer lover is Spiz. Conveniently placed in Wroclaw’s beautiful square, it’s definitely worth calling in to sample the fabulous selection of beers. We’re lucky that we have our very tour guide when we visit Wroclaw – as this is Mum’s home city and that means we get to visit all the best places and Spiz is one not too miss.

Spiz is a micro brewery, beer hall and restaurant, but we were there for the beer. I warn you though, it is not for the faint-hearted. As is the case with many Polish beers, it is strong. We ordered Piwo ciemne (Dark beer) and Piwo jasne miodowe (Honey beer) and on the menu is states it is “e.w. 12%” but that actually means “extract by weight” and the alcohol content as we would normally show it (by volume), is more like 6%. Still strong enough to give you a warm glow on a fresh day like today!

The beer hall area is in a quirky basement, not a huge place like a typical beer hall but big enough. The service is friendly and the beer is top quality, so you won’t be disappointed here. Every pint comes with a slice of bread topped with pork fat, which the local’s wolf down. I’m sure it’s designed to make them thirstier, so they order more beer, but no-one is complaining! Dad is not so sure about this delicacy, but Mum can’t get enough of it, despite turning her face up at pork scratching snacks back in the UK, even though they are not that different!
